Hi there, I’m Liz Hutchman. For more than two decades, improvisation has shaped the way I communicate, collaborate, teach, and connect with others. Today, I bring those principals to professionals, performers, and communities through workshops, coaching, and keynote presentations that build confidence, strengthen communication, and encourage meaningful connections – all while having a bit of fun along the way.
Making room for laughter, recognition, and the courage to be changed.

“The thing about improvisation is not about what you say. It’s about listening to what other people say. It’s about what you hear.” ~ Paul Merton
Beyond the Script: Building Human Connection
Real life doesn’t follow a script.
The improvisational practices I offer help teams and individuals cultivate trust, navigate ambiguity, and find inspiration by meeting each moment with awareness, humor, and creative flexibility.
Improvisation offers us the opportunity to explore the unexpected; from this place, we can transform confidence, unlock potential, and connect to what matters most.
Together, we explore how presence becomes power, and how collaboration becomes instinct.

Where play meets purpose
The work I do is steeped in spontaneity, strategy, and joy. Whether supporting teams, guiding individuals, or shaping collective spaces, I draw on improvisation to create environments where clarity, flexibility, and creative agility can flourish.
Through The Improvised Order and The Warm-Up Table, I help people recognize opportunity, listen without distraction, and respond more fully to the moment.
“Improvisation is not only performance, it’s a way of showing up with care, courage, and the willingness to be seen” ~ Liz Hutchman

FAQs
What if I’m not funny?
The goal in improv, contrary to popular belief, is not to be funny. The humor often emerges from the moment itself—not from trying to be funny. What you truly need to succeed in improv is simply you.
What if I make a mistake?
The beauty of improv is that there are no mistakes! Everything we do is accepted as an opportunity. Each misstep becomes a new doorway. Improv helps us explore without fear of failure or judgement.
How does improv and play apply to professional needs?
Improvisation supports stronger communication, deeper listening, and meaningful collaboration. By bringing improv into the workplace, we create space for creative problem solving, adaptability, and a shift from a “me” mindset to a “we” one.
Can anyone do improv?
Yes! Improv is for everyone. My approaches are designed to meet you where you are, in a space where safety and curiosity go hand in hand. Expect a blend of joyful discovery and moments that leave you surprised, stretched, and smiling.

How is this different from acting or performance?
Unlike stage improv, which is often designed to entertain, applied improv is about being present, not performing. It’s rooted in curiosity, connection, and spontaneous expression—not applause.
This approach goes back to the 1940s and the work of Viola Spolin, who developed improvisational games to help children, many of them immigrants, to build confidence, communicate, and play freely in post-war America. Her work wasn’t about training actors; it was about nurturing humans. That same spirit lives on in applied improv today: a space for listening, growth, and being more fully ourselves with others.

What if I feel nervous or shy?
Feeling nervous is completely normal and often a beautiful starting point. Improv works gently, and my sessions are designed to be supportive. You’ll be surprised how quickly connection replaces fear.

What can I expect from a session?
Sessions usually include playful warmups, guided explorations, and simple partner or group exercises. There’s room for reflection, laughter, and collaboration. The goal isn’t to perform—it’s to connect, create, and feel more present in the moment.
The way you trust, listen, and show up matters.
